Social Media Terms & Conditions

The Western Australian Electoral Commission maintains social media accounts to raise awareness of electoral events, engage Western Australians in the democratic process, and respond to questions and enquiries.

Professionalism, courteousness and respect underpin all our dealings with the public. The Commission must also be completely independent and impartial in carrying out its duties as the State’s statutory election provider. The following guidelines for users engaging with our social media ensures our customer service standards and strict political neutrality are maintained.

These guidelines apply to the Commission’s Facebook page, Twitter feed and YouTube channel. These accounts are monitored between 8.30 am and 5.00 pm Monday to Friday, with extended hours as necessary during elections.


Please follow these five simple rules when engaging with the Commission’s social media:

  1. Please do not post about or name candidates or parties. The Commission must be strictly impartial in the administration of elections and will never comment on candidates, parties or their policies. We do not allow any partisan political commentary or content that appears to preference a candidate or party on social media.
  2. Please be respectful and consider other’s points of view. We do not allow content that could be considered offensive, defamatory, obscene, discriminatory, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate for an audience of all ages.
  3. Please do not post personal information. The Commission maintains strict standards of privacy and as publicly accessible platforms, social media is not appropriate for making enquiries when you need to disclose personal information. Please contact us directly and our staff can assist you confidentially.
  4. Please keep posts relevant to the Commission and the electoral process. These forums exist for asking questions and to discuss and learn about elections.
  5. Please don’t spam or try to advertise. Multiple, duplicate or repetitive posts do not educate or enhance democratic debate.

While the Commission supports lively, open discussion, we reserve the right to delete or hide any comments or content that doesn't comply with our rules, or which are otherwise deemed inappropriate. Users who repeatedly break these rules may be blocked.

The Commission values your contribution and welcomes feedback on its services. We do our best to respond directly to all enquiries through social media.
